magical machine renovation

Machine Project has a probletunity before it. We've outgrown our space, and we had a crazy flood that trashed our office.

Often we have to turn people away because the gallery is too crowded. But! Our office is really big, bigger than we really need, especially now that we have the secret underground classroom.

Let's make our office smaller and our public space bigger. We want to move the divider between the front and the office back about ten feet, which will give us an additional 160 square feet of public space. That's a lot! Think of all the elbow room you'll have.

This plan got started when our (perhaps negligent) landlords let another hot water heater fail in the apartment above us (yes, this has happened before), dramatically flooding the aforementioned back office with over 100 gallons of water. How do we know that it's over 100 gallons of water? Because after destroying our office, the water made its way down into our underground classroom, where it stayed until we collected it with our newly purchased for the occasion wet dry vac.

This flood is actually a good thing, because it gave us the great idea to make the gallery bigger, but it's also a bad thing because it destroyed our office, printers, furniture, etc.

So, in conclusion, we're trying to raise $2500, which we estimate will cover the cost of repair and renovation. And in the end, we can have a big party in our big new space.

I have lived in many cities all over the US and I don’t think that people in LA realize how unique Machine is. Mark regularly holds free events and lectures and workshops around digital and electronic culture. I challenge any of you to name another institution, where you’ll find events like “Dorkbake”, “Scrap-yard Challenge”, and “Graphic Design for N00bz” just to name a few.
Mark has set what I think is a modest goal for the repairs. My house flooded several years ago and I can tell you that 2000.00 may not even cover just the raw materials. Actually, I am a bit worried that this campaign is too modest; hopefully we can double the initial goal and all show Mark how much the Machine Project means to us all.
I donated to Mark’s campaign for two reasons, which I hope others will take into consideration when deciding how much to give.
Reason 1
As I expressed above, the Machine Project has a ton of goodwill from the people who have enjoyed all its’ offerings (shows, classes and occasionally free beer). For that reason alone many others like myself have reason to give to ensure that the space is returned to its original “gory” ... er “glory”!
Reason 2
Essentially, this campaign is about fixing the physical “rented” space but that does not support the virtues of the Machine Project. I doubled what I was initially going to give because, while this physical space needs help now, the concept of Machine depends on our help in the future. I want to make sure that Mark and the others who regularly pitch in at Machine have extra funds to extend the offerings, special events and community outreach that helped make Machine great from the start.

Thanks to everyone's generous support, our renovation was a success!

We've hopped the gallery partitions back 10 feet, giving us a ton of space for events.








The ceiling is no longer falling down on us --








and we now have a new sliding door & permanent wall in the back office,

along with ridiculous amounts of plastic storage to keep our stuff safe from flash floods, waterfalls, indoor rainstorms and watergun fights.




Thank you to everyone who donated and helped out. It really meant a lot to us, and I can't imagine being able to recover so quickly without the help that came in through Pledgie.
