A 2006 report from the National G(ay) and Lesbian Task Force estimates that a third of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ. In New York City, this means that something like 8,000 to 10,000 youth are without shelter every night. This "epidemic" of homelessness among LGBTQ youth that puts these young people at risk for other harm from street life.
At Homeless Youth Services, we provide emergency shelter to homeless LGBTQ youth in New York City 365 days a year. Each night, a few of the city's LGBTQ youth find a place to stay, take a shower, wash their clothes, and get a meal.
In addition, Homeless Youth Services provides LGBTQ kids with counseling, tutoring, resume workshops, and help getting into and staying in school.
To continue these services, we need your help. As many of our young people return to school, there are growing needs for books, clothes, transportation and school supplies.
